Wet 4th of July

Pine Creek from Cedar Run Creek Bridge

Water rushing down small stream on Leetonia Rd.
To see video you will have to go direct to blog and not read from email. Here are the results of a lot of rain coming quickly down this morning on soaked ground. Pine Creek made it up to 5.5 feet at around noon. The Stoners on Pine Creek reported to me they just saw someone floating by yelling holding on to a kayak. Another person in a kayak was following telling them to just let the kayak go. My experience with Pine creek is that anything above 4 foot is for expert paddlers, 3-4 foot is for a good paddler and below 3 anyone can give it a try.  Below 2' best not go far with a boat a tube is really about all that will float that low. Above 6 foot is for fools as usually large trees are floating down with you and dodging debris can be more than a challenge. My rule is if it is chocolate colored...I stay out. It is dropping fast and by tomorrow should be safe again for most causal boaters and swimmers. Mountain girl, Paula, logging out.

Dixie Run Flood continued

I got up to the Dixie Run area again. The guys were at Young Guns camp cleaning up their flood mess. Fortunately for them they had a concrete floor inside camp and throw rugs on it, which are now throw away rugs. Much of their downstairs furniture was damaged and their refrigerator destroyed. They had to cut the drywall up the wall about 18", but with the fans going I didn't notice much of a smell and it seemed they had things fairly under control.
Their biggest concern and the concern of those living in area or with camp in the area are the numerous trees now blocking the creek. You can see on of the blocks in the first picture.
According to early reports the township doesn't have the money to fix anything including the road, which is totally blocked off about 1/2 mile north of the old CCC camp. The road that intersects at the CCC camp and goes over a bridge is also unsafe. The township did "fix" or should I say make barely passable the road in front of Floyd's place(where you see orange cones in pictures). The problem will be if the area gets any more rain before these blockages and damages are addressed it could become an even greater hazard to the road and all below. I think because this was such a small area affected by this monster rain(reports of up to 10" in 6 hours by residents) it has gotten little attention or help.
Since we will be heading into winter with the possibility of heavy snow/heavy spring runoffs, the idea of more damage being created here and lives or property being at risk is very real. Hopefully, someone will take the bull or should I say "Run" by the horns and get this fixed. Mountain girl, Paula, logging out.

No Flooding here!

So many of you have been calling and emailing thought I would post conditions. We stayed just to the west of the line of storms that have caused all the flooding. Pine Creek only went to 5 yesterday and is back down below 3. I know it would have been worse had we not of been so dry for so long. The ground is now very saturated and if we get anymore big storms it will certainly drive the creek up. The worst result of rain is people cancelling their trips up and the gloomy weather makes you want to stay in bed. It isn't too bad for kayaking the creek if you can avoid some of the debri that was stirred up by the storm. I will post if things change. Mountain girl, Paula, logging out.

Just got this link from Jan Sager now I see why everyone is calling: Flood in Pa
