Dinner at Bear Mountain Camp

Wilma and Sonnie Eberly

Corn Pie
On Thursday, Lee and I were invited over to Bear Mountain Camp by Wilma and Sonnie Eberly for dinner. They went all out to adapt to our vegetarian ways with a "Corn Pie." We had never heard of before this pie before, I guess it is a down state stable around corn picking time. The little ceramic bird in the middle lets the steam out of the pie as it cooks. Reminded me of the old child's poem twelve and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. The pie is made with regular pie crust, corn, potatoes and seasonings in it. You can top it with boiled eggs and warm milk when you eat it to add some protein. It was very good along with the beets, beet-pickled eggs, homemade macaroni and cheese. For desert they had some nice peaches topped with whipped cream. I was not only full then but enjoyed the care package of all the food they sent home with us the following day.
As usual Wilma and Sonnie are the perfect hosts with great conversation to go along with the food. It was a welcome break away from our noisy bridge pump and well worth the extra long drive around the mountain to get to them. Thanks to them both for a wonderful night. Good times at Bear Mountain Camp

Sonnie and Wilma Eberly
Lee and I had a wonderful evening with Sonnie and Wilma Eberly at Bear Mountain Camp. Sweet corn, homemade biscuits, salad, potatoes, beets and more graced the table. Of course the most fun at a dinner party is always the conversation. Stories of the past struggles, triumphs and just plain funny stuff always makes for a good evening. I think a home cooked meal in a nice quiet cabin always brings out the good stories.
Sonnie told us he used to be an army cook and cooked for over 200 guys at a time. So when the job of camp cook for a mere 20 or so came up he hardly blinked. According to Wilma, Sonnie isn't only a good cook for men at war or in the woods, he has been her cook for a long time. And now that he is retired he has dinner waiting for her. Wow! All I can say Wilma is you are one lucky girl. Of course, I think she knows that. I always like seeing how couples that do well together learn quickly that a long relationship is about supporting each other by doing the things each of you do best to make life a lot easier. I hope today's generation takes something away from their example.
Much of the evening's conversations float around the animals we have seen in the woods and the stories of being stuck on the road in bad weather. It was a nice cool evening and we ended our stay with the Eberlys talking out on the porch. Time seems to fly quickly when you are having a good time and it was close to 10pm before we left. Thanks again for a good evening....the mountain girls, Paula and Lee Anne.

Fall in Cedar Run

This summer has been so dry I thought I would get a picture from the old train bridge just North of Cedar Run. It is now part of the rails to trails and is shown in the first picture.

The second picture shows the creek bed close to the bridge so dry you could walk across most of the creek. The third picture is looking downstream from the bridge and shows the poor water level continuing.

Last night we got our first decent rain in months, which gave some relief to the plants. I didn't notice much of an increase in the river level. I swear you could almost hear the sound of the trees slurping up the water as fast as it came down. I believe we got a couple inches of rain. Looks like a chance of rain during a couple days next week and that will continue to help things out.

Lee and I were also invited to Brad's house for dinner last night. He had his friends over: David to the far left, Walt, me, Lee and
Brad. Lee cooked a peach pie and some summer squash and the boys cooked up some nice chicken, a salad, and some mixed vegetables. We had a good time visiting and enjoyed the company.

The leaves by my estimate are about 20 percent changed. The next couple weeks will show the big display before the gray of winter. I always enjoy natures last good show.

Antler Inn

The mountain girls took a rare trip out to eat at the Antler Inn. As you recall from a post last year the Inn suffered a complete loss in a fire and was rebuilt and opened in May of last year. Well it has taken us this long to check it out but here are a few highlight.

The entrance door is a magnificent carved deer with an antler pull. Inside you find these cute benches held up by mens work boots. They have a nice bar and two eating areas. The largest one has a great four-sided fireplace that water flows over and is decorated with real trees on the 4 corners. The needles on the trees are fake, but it is difficult to tell by looking. They did a really great job on it.

Last but not least is a video of the buffet. It was a little dark but it still came out well enough to make you hungry. The buffet is around $22/person, but if you are hungry and want some good food it was well worth it. I loved the cranberry bread, probably because it is a lot sweeter than I usually feedmyself. Enjoy the visual tour and it is my recommendation to eat at Antlers if you want a great meal with wonderful surroundings. Mountain Girl, Paula, Logging off.
